4 Tips for Maintaining an Anesthesia Machine

Published on

Did you know the global anesthesia machine industry was worth over $16 million in 2021? Can you believe it? It seems impossible, but it’s true.

Anesthesia machines are responsible for the safety of millions of surgeries around the world each year. But like most machines, they require maintenance to operate smoothly and efficiently.

If you are wondering what tips you need to follow to maintain anesthesia machines, this short and simple guide is for you.

1. Clean the Machine

Cleaning anesthesia machine parts is a fairly straightforward process. You simply remove the circuit board from the machine and wipe it down with alcohol or denatured alcohol.

To ensure that you don’t damage any of the parts of the machine, use a soft cloth to wipe them down rather than using paper towels or other abrasive materials.

You should also clean the mask regularly by wiping it down with alcohol or denatured alcohol and rinsing it with sterile water before using it again.

2. Change the Filters

Anesthesia machines produce carbon dioxide when they are running. This can build up in an enclosed space like a patient room or operating room unless you change filters regularly.

When you have filters that aren’t changed regularly, those carbon dioxide levels can reach dangerously high levels that can cause unconsciousness or even death in people who are exposed to them for too long. So, it’s important to have filters changed regularly and to have your anesthesia machines serviced by a qualified technician at least once every six months.

3. Wash the Tubing

Cleaning the tubing on an anesthesia machine can be tricky because it’s so small and delicate. Be careful not to damage any part of it as you wash off any dirt or residue from previous uses of the machine.

You may need help from another person when washing out the smaller parts of your anesthesia machine.

When you’re finished washing the tubing, hang it up to dry. Make sure that all the pieces are completely dry before reassembling them.

4. Check Your Gas Supplies

A gas supply is necessary for an anesthesia machine to function properly. You will need to check your gas supply at least once a week to ensure that it is not leaking or running out.

If your gas supply is running low but the machine is still working, you can purchase an extension tubing that will allow you to run the machine longer before returning it for more gas.
