Most students usually get confused with the identification of row and column and they use them interchangeably sometimes.

When a researcher collects data, he arranges it in a tabular form. It is usually arranged in rows and columns for easy understanding and organized manner.

So, today in this article I will help you with the differences between these two words and how you can use them appropriately in your sentences.

·         Meaning of Row

Rows are arranged in a horizontal order in which names, objects or figures are placed beside each other. It generally goes from left to right.

·         Meaning of Column

Columns are arranged in vertical order in which names, objects or figures are placed down to each other. It generally goes from up to down.

In this the horizontal blocks are rows and the vertical blocks are columns.

Basic Difference between Row and Column in an Excel

  • Rows are arranged from left to right while columns are arranged from up to down.
  • Rows are the horizontal arrangement while columns are the vertical pattern.
  • In an Excel sheet, rows are identified with numbers while columns are identified as letters.
  • Excel differentiate rows using colons for example, B2:E2 while commas are used to differentiate columns.

Use of Row and Column in Real life

The real life example of Row-  you can see in cinema halls where seats are arranged in a horizontal order so it is written on the ticket that row 5 or row 1 which means you have to sit on the seat in row 5 or row 1 accordingly.

The real life example of columns you can see in the newspapers especially in the portion of advertised jobs where they are arranged in columns. Some articles in the newspaper are also published in that manner.

  • Teacher told us to arrange a single column queue and then go to the lab.
