About Coriander

Coriander is a leafy product that is also used as an ingredient in food preparation in different parts of the world. Coriander is mainly used to add flavor to dishes as it has pungent and fresh leaves. Another good thing is coriander leaves and crushed seeds can be added to the food while cooking or you can also add them when food is ready as they provide the same purpose in both ways.

Differences between Parsley and Coriander

The main difference between Parsley and Coriander is their nutritional composition. Parsley contains vitamin K, C, and A along with flavonoid, apigenin, and luteolin at greater percentages. On the other hand, Coriander leaves and seeds contain specific vitamins but are in low composition in comparison to Parsley. Further, Coriander leaves and seeds are a modest source of minerals and high composition dietary fiber. 

  • Use in Food

One can identify the difference between Parsley and Coriander by their use. Both the leaves and roots of Parsley are used in the preparation of food to add flavor and for garnishing. While coriander leaves are used in various food and the production of flavored tea, its seeds are roasted and crushed to prepare curry powder to add flavor to food.

  • Health Effects

Both Coriander and Parsley are a source of vitamins and several nutrients but they have some effects on the health of people. According to research, Parsley does not cause allergic reactions but excessive consumption of Parsley can cause uterotonic effects so it should be avoided by pregnant women. On the other hand, Coriander causes allergic reactions and health side effects to a certain number of people and thus most people avoid eating it.

Another notable difference between parsley and coriander is their edible parts. Parsley seeds are oval and provide sufficient oil for medicinal purposes while coriander seeds have a spherical shape and can be used as a flavored spice. Additionally, only the leaves and roots of Parsley can be eaten while all the parts of Coriander are edible.

  • Origin

The origin and biological characteristics of coriander and parsley differ. Parsley is known to have originated from Mediterranean reason and the countries in the Middle East region while Coriander is considered to have originated from Western Asia and the Southern European region. On the other hand, in terms of biology, Parsley behaves differently in several regions as it annually grows in tropical and subtropical regions while growing biennale in temperate areas but Coriander is an annual plant that grows once per year.

  • Flavor and Appearance 

The flavor and appearance of parsley and coriander are different so anyone can distinguish the two plants. Coriander is more pungent and flavored than parsley while the flavor of parsley can be mild and grassy. In terms of color and shape, parsley is bright green and has curly shapes while Coriander leaves have a deep green color with a sharper and rounded shape.
