Introduction

Gelato and sorbet are two common frozen desserts which are usually consumed in hot summer days. Although they are different, these desserts are often regarded the same with the same base of ingredients. Gelato is an Italian word for ice cream but it is different from sorbet in terms of composition and nutritional values. The lack of dairy ingredients makes sorbet differ from the frozen desserts.

What is Gelato?

Gelato is a frozen dessert which is mainly composed of milk, cream, sugar, egg yolk and a variety of flavoring agents. The dessert is quite similar to ice cream in terms of ingredients but it is more dense and smooth due to its preparation. Gelato is prepared using more milk and less cream which gives it less fat compared to ice cream. Also, it is churned in machines to give it a fluffy texture. Gelato is prepared slowly while freezing at relatively warm temperatures that ice cream. It is mostly consumed in small portions due to the more creamy texture. It has fat and more calories thus it is not considered to be a healthy option.

What is Sorbet?

Sorbet is a frozen dessert which is made of sweetened juice, sugar and flavored water. In order to reduce its icy texture, alcohol can be added to it. Sorbet contains no milk or cream in it and is often churned in an ice-maker machine with little aeration. People consider it the better option over gelato as it is naturally fat-free and contains fewer calories. If you are allergic to sugar content then try to avoid it as it is not a go-to frozen dessert and its consumption can increase the blood sugar content. Due to absence of any dairy product, it is deficient in calcium nutritional value. Chefs make sorbet from a wide variety of fruits and other flavoring agents.
