Colorado Springs, CO, is the third most popular tourist destination in the state, and for many reasons. If you haven’t been to Colorado Springs, you need to make it your next vacation destination.
There are so many fun things to do in Colorado Springs. With museums, hiking destinations, beloved parks, and more, the city has something to offer everyone.
If you’re considering a trip to Colorado Springs, you’ve got many activities to work into your trip planning. To help you out, here are five things you can’t afford to miss when visiting Colorado Springs.
1. Visit Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of the top-ranked zoos in the nation. Here you will get an up-close experience with rare animals. You can feed lettuce to a giraffe, an apple to an elephant, or a carrot to a rhino.
You and the kids can hop aboard the zoo’s famous carousel, and you can take a ride on the Mountaineer Sky Ride with amazing views of Pikes Peak. All of this and the amazing dining options make Cheyenne Mountain Zoo an experience you can’t miss.
2. Space Foundation Discovery Center
The Space Foundation Discovery Center is the only museum in the area dedicated to space, science, and technology. Here you’ll learn about space travel, rockets, the history of humans in space, and more.
This is a fun and educational experience for all ages!
3. Stand Atop Pikes Peak
At 14,115 feet, Pike’s Peak is the highest summit of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. A new Summit Complex opened in 2021, allowing for a great view and an exploration into the history of the mountain and conservation initiatives.
You can drive to the summit, cycle, hike, or book a shuttle service. You can also ride the recently reopened Cog Railway where you can enjoy views of Front Range reservoirs on the way up.
4. Visit Garden of the Gods Park
A Colorado Springs vacation isn’t complete without a trip to Garden of the Gods park. The 1,350-acre park is a spectacular sight with its unique sandstone rock formations. These formations are naturally formed, and they have descriptive names such as “Balanced Rock” and “Kissing Camels.”
This is an excellent place for photography, and it’s also a wonderful hiking location.
4. Visit Old Colorado City
In the 1890s, during the gold rush, Colorado’s original capital was known for saloons, brothels, and gaming parlors.
Now it’s home to various galleries, shops, boutiques, and restaurants. The 1800s architecture surrounded by many trees will feel like a pleasant walk in a different era.
