Introduction
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks globally which is available across every corner shop. With a bunch of benefits, it has a low calorie count which also helps the body with cognitive functions and brain alertness. The presence of antioxidants makes it more beneficial thus you can enjoy the flavored beverage with no diet scare.
Coffee appears in two main formulations either ground or instant. If we think about coffee usage then instant coffee can be a good additive to other beverages as its preparation process is very time efficient but its aroma is not as strong as ground coffee. The two formulations differ in type of beans used and skills used to process.
What is Instant Coffee?
Sometimes referred to as soluble coffee, instant coffee is the beverage which is a product of coffee beans that have been processed for an ease of the consumer. As the name suggests, instant coffee serves best as you just need to add it to a cup or glass in some water and stir. Rest depends on the amount of coffee that gives a different texture to the coffee. In order to create a thick paste, you can add the syrup using a larger amount of instant coffee to water and mix it with sugar. It can be used together with other beverages such as milk. Instant coffee goes through the same process of roasting in combustion cylinders and to get the essence of instant coffee, it is extracted as soluble and volatile contents from the coffee beans.
What is Ground Coffee?
Ground coffee is a coffee bean that has already been grounded without any industrial processing. People usually prefer ground coffee to instant but its freshness does not last so long when left out in the air. Also, it might lose the coffee essence and flavor in the air. Making fresh ground coffee is an art that requires special equipment to brew the drink and also needs extra time. Handy equipment has reduced the processing time but not up to instant coffee processing which just takes seconds to brew. In ground coffee, the caffeine content is much higher as most of its essential oils are preserved giving the drink a richer aroma.
Differences between Instant Coffee and Ground Coffee
- Time and Simplicity – Preparing instant coffee is quite easy as compared to ground coffee. All you need is some coffee powder in a cup and some hot or cold water in it. Instant coffee is ideal for busy people who do not have time to prepare ground coffee as it takes time as well as the specialized equipment to prepare the drink.
- Flavor/Aroma – Due to the essential oils and chemical compositions, ground coffee tends to have better flavor variety while instant coffee loses some flavor and aroma due to the chain of processes.
- Preparation – Ground coffee requires much energy and time along with special equipment to create the drink. On the other hand, preparing instant coffee requires very minimal equipment (just a spoon and cup).
- Cost – Instant coffee is slightly cheaper than ground coffee.
- Durability – Ground coffee has a shorter shelf-life compared to instant coffee.
- Waste – Instant coffee does not produce any by-products while ground coffee might release some by-products (coffee fibers).
- Caffeine Concentration – Ground coffee has more caffeine than instant coffee.
