Differences between Alcoholic and Drunk
Both the terms refer to an individual with a drinking problem but there are some differences between them. The main difference between them is that a drunk is someone who is intoxicated with alcohol and loses control over mental and physical functions whereas; alcoholic refers to someone who is affected with alcoholism and it becomes like a disease. Apart from these, there are some other major differences which include:
- Meaning of Alcoholic Vs. Drunk – Being an alcoholic means you are affected by the drink and cannot run away from it. Drunk refers to the situation where you are intoxicated with what you have taken and in this condition; you cannot control your mental and physical functions. In short, a drunk is someone who likes to drink habitually whereas; an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol.
- Consumption – Alcoholics need to be drinking continuously to feel the effects of the alcohol while drunk usually over consumes the alcohol.
- Consistency – A drunk is someone who sprouts off in a bar due to heavy alcohol while an alcoholic does not stagger or sprout due to the habitual behavior.
- Addiction – An alcoholic is addicted to alcohol but it is not same with the drunk.
- Physical dependence – A drunken person is someone who can go for long periods of time without the desire or need for alcohol but an alcoholic is in constant need of consuming it.
- Physical symptoms – Both alcoholics and drunk people may experience intoxication when using the substance. For alcoholics, physical symptoms may include life-threatening seizures, vomiting, nausea, flu and other physical ailments. Being drunk may only lead to post-drinking hangovers or accidents related to carousing.
