What is Arabica?

Arabica is a variety of coffee that is obtained from the plant Coffea Arabica. It is the most popular type of coffee in the world and this plant is known for about 60% of the coffee production in the world. It is considered to have originated in Ethiopia. Presently, it is mainly grown in tropical regions and at high elevations around the globe. However, it requires certain conditions to grow good quality Arabica because the plant is somewhat difficult to cultivate. In comparison to Robusta, it is considered that Arabica coffee is high in flavor, sweetness, acidity, and balance and thus known as superior to Robusta. Arabica coffee is said to be a premium commodity. Additionally, there are various sub-varieties of Arabica coffee that include Bourbon, SL-28, Maragogype, Typica, and Pacarmara.

What is Robusta?

Robusta is a type of coffee that is made from the beans of the plant Coffea canephora. It is the second most popular coffee in the world after Arabica and this plant is known for around 40% of coffee production in the world. It is considered to have originated in western and Central Sub-Saharan Africa. Presently, it is mostly cultivated in Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Brazil. Vietnam is the largest producer of robusta coffee. It has a unique taste as the beans of Robusta have less sugar and more caffeine in comparison to Arabica beans. This is the reason Robusta tastes harsher and stronger in comparison to Arabica. Furthermore, Robusta also has less acidity, less fruity flavor, and a more woody flavor. Some people describe it as a rubbery flavor with a peanutty aftertaste. The beans of Robusta are commonly used in instant coffee and are also used in traditional espresso blends. Additionally, in comparison to Arabica, robusta plants have a greater crop yield and these plants are also easy to care for. These plants are less prone to diseases and pests and need fewer pesticides and herbicides to treat. This is the reason they are cheaper to produce in comparison to Arabica.

Main Differences Between Arabica and Robusta

The following are the differences between Arabica and Robusta as mentioned below:

  • Arabica is a type of coffee that comes from the plant Coffea Arabica whereas Robusta is a type of coffee that comes from the plant Coffea canephora.
  • One of the most notable differences between these two types of coffee is their taste. Robusta coffee has a rubbery taste and less fruity flavor whereas Arabica coffee is sweet and high in flavor.
  • Another difference between Robusta and Arabica is their caffeine content. Arabic contains about 1.5% of caffeine whereas Robusta contains about 2.7% caffeine content which is almost double. Also, caffeine carries a bitter taste that makes it an unpleasant drink.
  • Arabica contains almost 60% more lipids and twice the concentration of sugar in comparison to Robusta. This reason also impacts why Arabica is the most preferred coffee.
  • When it comes to the price, green beans of Robusta are half the price of Arabica green beans in the market.
  • Robusta is easier to cultivate on the farm and has a higher yield and is less sensitive to insects in comparison to Arabica which is a bit difficult to cultivate.

Conclusion

Overall both Arabica and Robusta are the most popular coffees in the world and are known for their tastes. When it comes to choosing the better one, Arabica is considered to be of superior quality. However, on the other hand, Robusta is easier to cultivate when it comes to production, but still Arabica is the largest produced coffee in the world.
