What are Avoidant and Schizoid personalities?

THe Avoidant personality disorder in a person is due to lack of any social interest and inadequacy which basically occurs due to fear of criticism and demotivation. Now if we talk about a Schizoid personality, this is characterized by those persons who avoid interaction with the society because they are the ones who are fond of solitary lifestyle and love their own company. They are emotionally cold. In this article we are going to tell you the difference between Avoidant and Schizoid personalities.

They have differences in their presentation. The Avoidant personality disorder takes place in those people who are sensitive to rejection and because of this fear, they stay alone, avoid socialising with different people, avoid meeting new people and have very low self esteem. This creates a feeling of inadequacy and they feel unwanted. Such people experience extreme anxiety and shyness in social situations. It does not mean that they don’t wish to have close relations. They want, but then comes extreme fear of getting neglected and avoided. Due to this fear, they back off and avoid physical contact. They have deliberately due to fear have imposed self isolation in themselves because of criticism. They are even known as self loathers.

The main reason behind Schizoid personality disorder is due to emotional detachment from society, apathy, coldness, and lack of interaction with others. They prefer solitude in their own world and prefer to stay happy in it with very few friends. These people are even minimally interested in them and have an indifference to praise or criticism. The people having Schizoid personality disorders prefer introspection to outside activities and specially have no interest in any kind of sexual activities. They enjoy solitude and are indifferent to society.

Difference in causes leading to such kind of personalities

In case of Avoidant personalities, the people can face childhood emotional neglect and peer group rejection due to their behaviour. These are considered as risk factors. It is mostly seen in early adulthood. The other factors which are responsible are temperamental factors which are mostly genetic and stammering.

On the contrary, causes of schizoid personality disorders are seen to be genetic. This happens due to unloving and neglecting parenting. The name is close to schizophrenia, it is mostly seen in the relatives of schizophrenic people.

Treatment

Avoidant personality disorder can also be treated. The person has to undergo various training like social skills and group therapy. Group therapy is the main objective of the therapist to gain the trust and confidence of the therapist. If in any case the trust is violated, then the patient will avoid the treatment sessions. So the therapist has to be really soft in her behaviour. These people should be encouraged and given proper motivation to challenge his negative beliefs about himself and bring him positivity. In many cases, medical therapy is also included.

For the treatment of Schizoid personalities, antipsychotic drugs  are needed. The main thing is to interact with them and make them social. They should be engaged in interaction with people by communicating their ideas, sharing different ideas, feelings and speech therapy.
