Introduction

Mandarin and tangerine are citrus fruits, which belong to the family of Rutaceae. When you peel and open them up they have segments of orange flavored fruit and are delicious to eat.  Both are rich in vitamin C and have multiple other health benefits. The tangerine produces the mandarin, thus a tangerine can be a mandarin but vice-versa is not possible.

Mandarin came from China and its name originates from the Chinese officials called Mandarins who wore orange clothing as a signature color of their official importance. Tangerine is a variety of mandarin and a sub group of that species, which was imported into Europe from Tangiers, Morocco. Though both the fruits are citrus and have many similar features but they differ from each other in a lot of aspects.

What is Mandarin?

The mandarins are loose, soft and sweet fruit, which have easy to peel skins. They are a good source of vitamin A, C, fibre and folic-acid as well as flavonoids and antioxidants. Well-known as a citrus fruit, mandarin is harvested in winter and canned easily to be available all year round. It is considered a great option for providing flavor for candy, bubblegum and ice-cream. Its peel is widely used in perfumes and scent. Research explores that eating mandarins can lower the risk of liver cancer, bad cholesterol and blood pressure. It has been analyzed that there are over one hundred and sixty different hybrids and varieties of mandarins which include clementine, Tangors, satsumas, owari and many more.  

What are Tangerines?

Tangerines have a darker orange skin that is rougher and thicker and more difficult to peel. With a sturdy skin, the fruit makes it a better export option which also survives better in high temperatures and dry conditions. Tangerines have many nutritional values consisting of fibre, vitamin C and other antioxidants.

  1. Divisions in subgroup – Mandarins are a type of citrus fruit and divided into three main sub-groups, Satsumas, Tangerines and Miscellaneous Hybrids. Tangerines are a subgroup of Mandarins. Thus, all Tangerines are a type of Mandarin but not all Mandarins are Tangerines.  
  2. Skin texture – Mandarins have smooth and thin skin, which make it easier to be peeled off while tangerines have thick skin, which make it harder to peel the skin off.
  3. Color – Tangerines have a darker orange color whereas Mandarins are of lighter and brighter orange shade.   
  4. Growing conditions – Tangerines grow and survive better in low temperatures and dry conditions. On the other hand, Mandarins are delicate to dry conditions and low temperatures and cannot survive in such conditions.  
  5. Taste – Mandarins are less tarty and sweet while tangerines are tarter and less sweet in taste.
  6. Shape – Tangerines are round and spherical in shape while Mandarins are oblate and less spherical.
