The term stout is derived from the old French word estout which means proud and strong. This is the reason it is used to refer to the first strong dark beer in the 1670s. Presently, it is used to refer to any beer which has a strong flavor but is more related to the strongly flavored porter. What is Porter?

Porter is a beer that has a dark color and is commonly brewed from dark malts. It was first manufactured in the early 18th century in London. It got its name from the street and river porters of London who favored it. Unlike other beers which were aged in the pub or by the dealer, it is the first beer to be aged in the brewery. It is prepared by mixing aged porter with fresh or mild porter and thus it is more time and cost-efficient than using the porter alone. Over the years, its popularity got diminished and now it is made milder with less original gravity.

Presently, there are different types of porters available in different parts of the world which include chocolate, vanilla, honey, and bourbon porters. Ireland made its first porter and exported it to other countries like Russia and Finland. Now different countries developed their own varieties of porter.
