Roll and Hand Roll are two terms that are related to popular Japanese food known as Sushi. There are several ways which are used to make rolls to serve this dish which is mainly made of rice and seafood. However, people usually get confused between roll and hand roll and use the terms interchangeably which may not be correct. So in this article, we will explain to you the meaning of the two terms and the main differences between the terms so that you can correctly use them.
What is Roll?
In Japanese, Roll is also known as Maki which is taken from the word maku which means wrapping or to the coil. In this type of Sushi dish, cooked rice, fish, seafood, or fruits and vegetables are wrapped in seaweed which is also known as nori with the help of bamboo mats. And thus it becomes a cylindrical roll that can be further cut into 6 or 8 pieces and is suitable for sharing while eating. Each piece of this dish is known as a roll and can be served to many people. One of the notable points of this role is that it is cylindrical and made from wrapping so that it can be cut into several pieces.
What is Hand Roll?
A hand roll is also known as Tamaki. In this system, it is specifically used to wrap sushi for one person. In this method, rice and fish are wrapped into a cone by using seaweed rather than making a cylindrical or long tube which is used in making rolls. This type of Sushi usually includes vegetables or fruits. A hand roll is made by hand and it’s quickly served after preparation. This hand roll is suitable and big enough to satisfy one’s hunger. So the major difference between roll and hand roll is between their shape rather than ingredients. However, there are also other factors to differentiate these two terms.
Differences between Roll and Hand Roll
Besides having similar ingredients used in making, roll and hand roll has major differences also. The following are the main differences between roll and hand roll are as follows:
- Shape
The roll is cylindrical while the hand roll is cone-shaped. The roll is prepared with the help of a makisu or bamboo mat. It is traditionally rolled in seaweed or can also be wrapped in soy paper. On the other hand, the hand roll is wrapped using seaweed but resembles the shape of ice cream. So their shape is the most important difference between them.
- Size
A roll is small in size because it is cut into pieces. After preparation of the roll, it is cut into 6 to 8 pieces and served to many people. On the other hand, hand rolls are bigger and ready for consumption and are not cut into small pieces. It is specifically made for one person. So the main difference between them lies in their size.
- Types
There are various types of Sushi rolls including Hosomaki, Chumaki, Futomaki, and Uramaki which all differ depending on the ingredients used in the preparation. On the other hand, there is only one type of hand roll that is Tamaki which is consumed directly after preparation and is not cut into smaller pieces.
- Eating Method
A roll is eaten using chopsticks while a hand roll is consumed using hands. The main reason behind this is that the roll is cut into smaller pieces so it can be eaten using chopsticks and can be consumed in one bite. However, the hand roll is a big cone that cannot be consumed using chopsticks or cannot be eaten in one bite so it is eaten with bare hands.
Conclusion
So overall, both roll and hand roll is associated with the preparation of Sushi which is a popular Japanese dish. As mentioned above, these two terms are significantly different in several ways. But mainly you can use the terms as per the size of the dish. If Sushi is served in a big cone shape which cannot be eaten with chopsticks then you will call it a hand roll while it is cut into small pieces that you have to consume through chopsticks then you will call it a roll only.
