A Paraprofessional is an educational employee who is not licensed or qualified to be a teacher but works alongside a well-certified or qualified teacher to provide help and support in the classroom.
However, they work under the guidance and supervision of the lead teachers but sometimes they can work independently.
In other words, Paraprofessionals are also called ‘para pro, instructional assistants, teacher’s aides or classroom aides.
What is Paraprofessional ? & Responsibilities of Paraprofessionals
The basic responsibility of a parapro is to assist teachers by helping to manage students and classrooms and they also help teachers grade papers, tests, and homework as well as in making lesson plans. They also conduct classroom activities and provide one-on-one direction.
On the other hand, they not only assist teachers but also work with students in special education classrooms or with students who have special needs. These include students with disabilities like hyperactivity, behavioral issues, autism, physical disabilities like vision or hearing impairment, etc.
When working with these students they keep in touch with parents and case managers to ensure they are providing the actual support these students need.
A paraprofessional also inspires students for positive conduct and redirects students when they engage in off-task behavior. The most important thing they do is helping students with physical disabilities. They help them with wheelchair movement, feeding, and use of the bathroom, etc.
Other duties of a Paraprofessional
Besides these responsibilities, Paraprofessionals also perform the following tasks :
- They perform office duties by assisting teachers with paperwork.
- They ensure that students follow classroom safety standards.
- They help teachers with lessons by getting instructional materials and equipment ready.
- They help teachers in keeping track of attendance, grades, homework, reports, etc.
- Act as a translator especially for those who are learning English.
- They manage the classroom to minimize noise and distractions.
- Encourage and help students to be more interactive to improve their participation.
Qualifications of a Paraprofessional
Paraprofessionals work in an academic system but their qualifications differ from that of a teacher. The general requirements for a Paraprofessional are:
- A high school diploma
- Paraprofessional associate’s degree
- Pass a state skill assessment test
- Working experience with students especially disable children
- Excellent social, communication, and interpersonal skills

Paraprofessionals are more than just assistants to teachers. The best thing about them is their skills and strategies which help students to learn faster and understand difficult tasks and topics.
