In this blog we are going to tell you about Difference between Micronutrients and Macronutrients, so read this blog carefully to get the complete information.

We all need nutrients including plants and animals to maintain growth and health. As you may know, there are mainly two types of nutrients that are micronutrients and macronutrients. Most people think that they both are the same but they significantly differ in various ways. Their differences matter when it comes to the quantity required to ensure the best health and their functions in the body. So let’s know what micronutrients and macronutrients are and the main differences between them.

About Micronutrients

Micronutrients are needed in small quantities because of the source by which micronutrients are obtained. They mainly come from minerals that exist in smaller quantities so you cannot consume them in large quantities. They do not contain calories that give energy but mainly contain high volumes of antioxidants. These antioxidants play a vital role in protecting the body from various diseases and help eliminate toxins that can negatively impact human health. Additionally, micronutrients also play an important role in the making of enzymes as well as other components which are beneficial in improving different functions of the body. The main source of micronutrients includes minerals and vitamins which are consumed in small quantities.

About Macronutrients

Macronutrients are needed in large quantities to ensure the proper function of the whole body. Carbohydrates primarily constitute macronutrients as they are high in fiber and thus consumed in large quantities to promote growth in humans. Unlike micronutrients, macronutrients are significantly known for enhancing growth. They contain calories that provide energy to the body. A few examples of macronutrients include fat, proteins, and carbohydrates and they help different parts of the body like the kidneys, heart as well as the brain. The energy provided by macronutrients is specifically for ensuring that these organs work at optimum level to provide proper functioning of the body and excellent health. The main foods which are rich in macronutrients are meat, cereals, fish, potatoes, yam, nuts, water as well as oilseeds. But one of the notable points is that consumption of macronutrients in the form of saturated fat and carbohydrates can lead to health issues like obesity or diabetes.

Differences between Micronutrients and Macronutrients

The main differences between Micronutrients and Macronutrients are as follows:

  • Quantity

Micronutrients are required by the body in large quantities as their source is usually found in large quantities in different foods. It is needed in large quantities to get maximum health and body performance. On the other hand, micronutrients are needed in small quantities as their source also exists in small quantities in different types of foods.

  • Function

Macronutrients are mainly known for providing the body with the energy which it needs to properly work different organs. Macronutrients are responsible for repairing body tissues, and energy storage, promoting normal function of cells and blood clotting. On the other hand, micronutrients are responsible for muscle growth and improving health. It prevents diseases that can attack human bodies. Micronutrients are beneficial in promoting the growth of healthier hair, good skin, development of strong teeth and bone, production of hormones, and enhancing a strong immune system.

  • Effect

Excessive consumption of macronutrients can lead to health problems like obesity and diabetes but also lack of sufficient macronutrients can lead to problems like malnutrition and kwashiorkor. On the other hand, excessive consumption of micronutrients does not show any effect but insufficient amounts of micronutrients in the body can lead to certain health issues like scurvy and goiter.

  • Examples

Examples of macronutrients include carbohydrates for energy storage, fat for storing vitamins, and proteins for maintaining enzymes. Examples of micronutrients include vitamins and minerals for promoting the healthy growth of different parts of the body. Micronutrients are also responsible for the prevention and fight against various diseases.

Conclusion

So overall, both macronutrients and micronutrients are needed by the body as they have different health benefits. Macronutrients are needed in large quantities while micronutrients are needed in small quantities. The deficiency of both nutrients can lead to several diseases. But remember, unlike micronutrients, excess amounts of macronutrients can lead to health problems. So provide your body with a sufficient amount of both macronutrients and micronutrients by maintaining your balanced diet. So we hope now you know the difference between them and also know how they both play an important role in the functioning of the body.
