As most people ask, ‘What does SAT stand for?’. Apart from this most students also worry and wonder about, “What does ACT stand for?” This is because these exams are important when applying for a good college in the United States and Canada.

What does ACT stand for?

ACT doesn’t have any particular full form but you can call it ‘American College Test’ because the popularity of the acronym has taken the place of what it actually stands for.

The test has been in the works for over 60 years and it started functioning when most students found the SAT exam difficult for one or another reason.

1) Division of ACT

There are 5 divisions and content of this ACT which include English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, and Essay. The ACT exam is taken seven times a year. The exam fee is not more than $160 without an essay and about $170 with an essay included. The duration of the exam is 2hrs 55 mins without essay and 3 hrs 55 mins with essay included.

2) The English Section

The English part of the exam is 45 minutes in which the total number of questions is 75. This exam consists of five passages of various sections and the punctuation marks in an organized manner really matter in this section.

3) The Mathematics Section

The mathematics part consists of 60 questions and lasts for 60 minutes. The questions from algebra, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry, etc. are there and simple calculators are allowed.

4) The Science Section

The science section comprises 35 questions that last for 45 minutes. The questions consist of ensuring your knowledge of basic and advanced science.

5) The Writing Section

The reading lasts for 45 minutes and it has 35 questions. This section is divided into 4 parts. The questions are based on comprehension passages to test your reading skills and ability to understand.

6) The Essay Section

This section lasts for 40 minutes. This section is not compulsory for some colleges but is required at most colleges.

Functions of the ACT

  • To measure the general intellect of the students.
  • To check the ability of students to complete their college work.
  • The ACT scores can be used to supplement grades of the secondary school period.
  • Some students can take the ACT exam instead of the SAT exam.
