The English language seems confusing if you don’t understand similar words. Words like follow up or follow-up or follow up are misused by most people. Now, you must be thinking what’s the difference between these words as all three words have the same spelling. But there is a difference between ‘Follow up’ with space, ‘Follow-up’ with hyphen and ‘Followup’ without space. 

So, today I will explain to you the difference between these words and help you understand their right usage in the sentences.

Meaning of Follow up

Follow up means to maintain contact with someone in order to get more information and to get their final response. It could also mean following up on someone. 

Follow is used as a verb and there is not much difference between the one with hyphen and without hyphen as the only difference is their usage in sentences.

Examples

The journalist decided to follow up on the rumours to know the actual truth.

I was asked to follow up on her for her admission.

She will follow up with the readings on Sunday.

Meaning of Follow-up

It also means to maintain contact with someone to get more information regarding the subject. It is a noun and can also be used as an adjective.

Examples

The follow-up process of getting a loan seems difficult but it is not.

The teachers are hired on the basis of follow-up interviews.

The process of follow-up in the hospital can make anyone annoyed.

Meaning of Followup

Grammatically, ‘Followup’ is a wrong way of writing the correct word ‘Follow up’. But according to the American Heritage dictionary it can be used as an alternative to the ‘Follow up’ (with space).

Some tips on a follow up email

You should always add reference to freshen the memory of the client. You may write something like, “My boss asked me to follow up to see what you thought about (subject of email).”

You can also add some additional information on the follow up email. For example, “(product name) can help you for a month. The product attached to this mail is a key to a free trial for a month.”

You can also ask for call-to-action which means ask them for the reply on what they think.
